Frequently Asked Questions
Repairs
My garage door won't open. What should I check first?
Start with the basics before calling us. Check that the opener is plugged in and the outlet has power. Look for a blinking light on the opener unit — most models show an error code. Make sure nothing is blocking the safety sensor eyes near the floor on each side of the door. If the door was manually locked, the trolley arm may have been disconnected from the opener.
If none of those solve it, give us a call at (760) 489-5588 — we'll often diagnose the issue over the phone and can usually get out to you the same day.
My door is making a loud grinding or scraping noise. Is that dangerous?
Grinding or scraping usually means the rollers, tracks, or hardware need attention. Left alone, worn rollers can damage the tracks and turn a minor repair into a larger one. Stop using the door and call us — it's almost always a quick fix with new rollers or a track realignment.
My door is off its tracks. Can I fix it myself?
We strongly advise against it. A garage door off its tracks is under significant tension — from the springs and its own weight — and can cause serious injury if handled incorrectly. Stop using the door immediately and call a professional. We can typically get to you the same day in Escondido and North County.
A panel on my door is bent or cracked. Do I need to replace the whole door?
Not necessarily. In many cases a single panel can be replaced if it's still available for your door's make and model. We'll assess whether the frame is intact, the surrounding panels are undamaged, and whether a patch repair or full replacement makes better financial sense for you long-term. We'll give you an honest recommendation, not just the more expensive option.
How quickly can you respond to an urgent repair?
We prioritize same-day service for customers throughout Escondido and surrounding North County communities. Our hours are Monday through Saturday, 7 am to 5 pm. Call us at (760) 489-5588 or on our cell at (760) 207-2786 — we'll do everything we can to get your door working the same day.
New Door Installation
What types of garage doors do you sell and install?
We install a wide range of door styles and materials to match any home, including:
• Steel doors — durable, low-maintenance, with great insulation options
• Wood doors — classic warmth and curb appeal, fully custom
• Rolling shutters — ideal for security and commercial use
• Single-car and double-car configurations in raised panel, carriage house, and contemporary flush styles
We work with trusted brands including Amarr, Clopay, Doorlink, and others. Call us and we'll help you choose the right door for your home, budget, and style.
How long does a new garage door installation take?
Most standard residential installations are completed in 3 to 6 hours, including removal of the old door. Custom or specialty doors may take longer depending on the materials involved. We'll give you an accurate time estimate when we confirm your appointment.
Do you haul away the old door?
Yes. Removal and disposal of your existing door is included as part of our installation service. You don't need to worry about it — we handle everything from start to finish.
Do you install entry gates as well?
Yes — we install, repair, and maintain electric entry gates and automated gate systems. Whether you're adding a new driveway gate or need service on an existing one, give us a call and we'll walk you through your options.
Spring Repairs & Replacement
How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?
Common signs of a broken spring include:
• A loud bang from the garage (like a gunshot) — this is often the spring snapping
• The door feels extremely heavy when you try to lift it manually
• The opener motor runs but the door barely moves or won't lift past a few inches
• A visible gap in the torsion spring above the door, or a coil hanging at an odd angle
If you suspect a broken spring, do not attempt to use the door. Call us right away.
Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
We strongly recommend against DIY spring replacement. Torsion springs are under enormous tension and can cause severe injury if released improperly. This is one of the most dangerous repairs a homeowner can attempt. Our technicians have the proper tools and training to replace springs safely and correctly. The cost of a professional repair is minimal compared to the risk of injury.
Should I replace both springs even if only one broke?
We typically recommend replacing both springs at the same time. If both were installed together, the second one is usually close to the end of its life. Replacing both now saves you a second service call in the near future — and since the labor is already done, the additional cost for the second spring is modest. We'll talk through the options with you and let you make the call.
What's the difference between torsion springs and extension springs?
Torsion springs are mounted horizontally above the door opening and use torque to counterbalance the door's weight. They're the most common type on modern sectional doors and generally last longer.
Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side of the door and stretch to provide lifting force. Older homes often have these. We handle both types — replacement, repair, and balancing.
Openers
What brands of garage door openers do you install?
We specialize in Genie and LiftMaster openers — two of the most reliable brands on the market. We stock a range of models including belt-drive, chain-drive, and screw-drive systems. We'll recommend the right unit based on your door size, how often you use it, and your noise tolerance.
My remote stopped working. Do I need a new opener?
Not necessarily — most of the time it's a simpler fix. Try replacing the battery in the remote first. If that doesn't work, the remote may need to be reprogrammed to the opener. If the wall button still works but the remote doesn't, the issue is almost certainly the remote or its antenna, not the opener itself. Give us a call and we can walk you through it.
Can you add smart home / Wi-Fi capability to my existing opener?
We typically recommend replacing both springs at the same time. If both were installed together, the second one is usually close to the end of its life. Replacing both now saves you a second service call in the near future — and since the labor is already done, the additional cost for the second spring is modest. We'll talk through the options with you and let you make the call.
What's the difference between torsion springs and extension springs?
In many cases, yes. Genie and LiftMaster both offer add-on Wi-Fi modules that let you open, close, and monitor your door from a smartphone app. We can assess your current opener and let you know if it's compatible. If not, we can replace it with a smart-enabled unit — it's often more affordable than you might expect.
My opener motor runs but the door doesn't move. What's wrong?
This usually means one of a few things:
• The trolley disconnect cord was pulled — reconnect the trolley to the drive by pulling the cord toward the door
• A broken spring is preventing the door from lifting (the motor can't overcome the door weight alone)
• The drive gear or carriage inside the opener has stripped or broken
We can diagnose and fix all of these — call us and we'll sort it out quickly.
Maintenance
How often should I have my garage door serviced?
We recommend a professional tune-up once a year for most homes. Regular maintenance catches small issues — worn rollers, loose hardware, low spring tension — before they become expensive failures. In San Diego's climate, dust and occasional moisture can accelerate wear on tracks and lubricated components, so annual service is especially worthwhile here.
What does a maintenance visit include?
Our maintenance service covers a thorough inspection and tune-up of the whole system, including:
• Lubrication of springs, rollers, hinges, and tracks
• Inspection and tightening of all hardware
• Spring tension balance check
• Safety reversal and sensor alignment test
• Opener force and limit adjustments
• Visual inspection of cables and rollers for wear
We'll flag anything that needs attention and give you a quote before doing any additional work.
Can I lubricate the door myself between service visits?
Yes, and we encourage it. Every six months, apply a garage door-specific lubricant (not WD-40, which is a degreaser) to the hinges, rollers, and the torsion spring. Do not lubricate the tracks — this causes the rollers to slip. If you're unsure what product to use, give us a call and we'll point you in the right direction.
